Privacy Policy
Last updated 8 September 2026
Hillcast("we", "us") helps you find the best UK hills and days for outdoor sport. It has no accounts and creates no personal profile. This policy explains the limited information kept on your device and the short-lived technical logs generated when you use the service.
Information we collect
We hold no account for you. There is no sign-in, so we never ask for your name, email address or a password, and we do not create a personal profile when you open the app.
Our hosting provider creates short-lived request logs that may include your IP address, device information, requested pages and timestamps. These logs are used only for security, reliability and diagnostics and are not linked to a profile.
The following information is kept on your own device:
- A preferences file stored on your device: your chosen sports, preferred regions and home location, so the app can rank hills near you and remember your filters between visits. It stays on your device, is never linked to an identity, and you can clear it at any time from Settings → Reset preferences.
- Home location: optional. If you set one — either coordinates from your device or a place you search for — it is stored in that same preferences file so we can sort hills by distance.
- An offline copy of hill data: so the app still works in the hills with no signal, the last hill ranking you viewed is kept in the app's local storage on your device. It holds only public hill and forecast information.
How we use it
Your preferences are read to sort and filter public hill and forecast data — nothing more. Because they never leave your device, there is no profile of you for us to analyse, sell, or hand to advertisers.
Location data
Location access is only requested when you tap "Use my current location" or sort by "Nearest". We use it to compute distances to hills and show nearby suggestions. We store only the coordinates or place label you save as your home location, and only until you change or delete it. You can deny or revoke location permission in your device settings at any time; the app remains fully usable without it.
Service providers
We rely on a small number of trusted providers:
- Supabase — database storage of the public hill list and cached forecast scores. It holds no data about you.
- Vercel — hosting, short-lived request logs used for security and diagnostics, and privacy-friendly aggregate usage analytics.
- Open-Meteo — weather forecasts and place search. Place searches send the text you type; they are not linked to your identity.
Links to other sites
Hill pages link out to route guides and mapping services such as Walkhighlands, OS Maps and Wainroutes. When you follow one of these links you leave Hillcast, and the site you arrive at has its own privacy policy and terms. We don't control those sites and aren't responsible for how they handle your information. We don't pass any information about you to them — a link is just a link.
Deleting your data
Everything the app deliberately remembers about your preferences is on your device. Settings → Reset preferences clears it immediately. You can also clear the app's stored data from your device settings, or delete the app entirely. Short-lived hosting logs expire according to our provider's retention schedule.
Security
We hold no passwords, because there is nothing to sign in to, and no personal records, because we do not create any. Traffic between your device and the app is encrypted over HTTPS.
Children
Hillcast is intended for adults aged 18 and over and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by the "last updated" date above.
